Reticent at first, then pale stone fruit, white blossom and a hint of slate. The palate is light, clear and juicy; the noticeable sweetness (48.4 g/l according to Falstaff) is carried by lively acidity, so the wine seems almost weightless and barely sweet.

Value for money

At around €18 to €19, one of Germany's best-value top Kabinetts – the price-to-quality ratio is exceptionally good here.

The estate

Based in Oberhausen for more than 250 years, this family estate became the internationally celebrated benchmark for Nahe Riesling under Helmut Dönnhoff, who made the wines from 1966; his son Cornelius took over with the 2007 vintage. The vineyards lie on very different soils – volcanic rock, slate, Buntsandstein – and include top sites such as the Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle.
