Profile
Horst Sauer set up on his own with his wife in 1977, after his father had still delivered the grapes to the cooperative; today his daughter Sandra Sauer is in charge of the cellar. The estate on the Volkach loop of the Main farms a good 20 hectares in around 125 parcels, above all in the Erste Lage Escherndorfer Lump and the Große Lage Am Lumpen 1655, on Muschelkalk, Lettenkeuper and loess loam. Silvaner dominates, but Riesling (around 15% of the area) is one of the estate’s flagships – from dry single-site wines to highly rated nobly sweet specialities. Stylistically, the estate aims for clear, fine fruit true to the variety.
