Grapefruit and green gooseberry on the nose, clear and fresh. The palate is juicy and light, with fine acidity and uncomplicated fruit; partial ageing in large oak casks gives the wine a little more texture than you would expect in this price bracket.

Value for money

Around €11.60 from the estate for a Gutswein whose previous vintage Falstaff rated 90+ points – that is a great deal of wine for very little money.

Goes well with

Asparagus with herb butter, Flammkuchen or pan-fried pike-perch.

The estate

The Deidesheim estate has an exceptional range of sites from Forst to Königsbach, including Pechstein, Kirchenstück, Jesuitengarten and Ungeheuer. Under managing director Stephan Attmann, von Winning has relied since 2008 on spontaneous fermentation in wooden casks and the gentlest possible bottling by gravity – a return to traditional winemaking that has set a precedent for dry German Riesling.
